Saturday Spotlight – Andrew Hedley (Principal Euphonium)

Andrew joined the Reg Vardy Band in March 2014 at the age of 15 and immediately impressed with his technical virtuosity and amazing sight reading ability. The band was very fortunate to have found its future principal euphonium player- Andrew took the “end chair” in September 2015 and has performed brilliantly ever since, winning the solo prize at the Doctor Martin competition in 2017 with Peter Graham’s Brillante-awarded by none other than Doctor Robert Childs..

Andrew is a former NYBBGB member and has led the euphonium section of various Salvation Army music school bands, incuding the SA’s Territorial (National) Youth Band (principal euph 2014-2017) Internationally, he has performed as guest principal euphonium and soloist with the SA’s German Staff Band, as well as playing in Disneyland Paris!

He won the James Etherington Music Award in 2014 and was a finalist in the Rotary North of England and Scotland Young Musician Competition in 2015.

Along with four other euphonium players, in 2016 Andrew took part in a CD recording with Derick Kane for a track on Derick’s latest solo CD to celebrate 40 years as principal euphonium of the International Staff Band.

As well as this he’s a thoroughly nice young man and a terrific bandsman. We’re very pleased, honoured and proud to have him!

Come and hear Andrew playing Brillante at our next concert at Chester le Street Salvation Army on Saturday 7th July.

Saturday Spotlight – The Percussion Section

The first of a regular series looking at the people that make up the Reg Vardy Band. This week we focus on the percussion section.

Oliver Newton
Music has been a central part of Oliver’s life since the age of 8, and in that time he has picked up a range of instruments, including the clarinet, piano, and orchestral percussion. Since those early days he has gone on to perform with numerous bands and orchestras at venues across the UK and Europe, including several appearances at The Sage, Gateshead; Birmingham Symphony, and Royal Albert Halls. Now based in the North of England, he is currently studying towards a PhD in computational astrophysics at Durham University, and plays with the University and Reg Vardy Bands.

Ed Chapman
Originally from Windsor, Ed studied percussion with the Army Cadet Force from the age of 12; eventually becoming a specialist in timpani and drum kit. He now works as a freelance musician and tutor in the north east, performing with everything from orchestras and chamber ensembles to function groups and big bands.

Duncan Wakeling
Duncan is the dad of the section, both because his age is not far off Ed and Ollie’s combined and because his son, Lewis, was born in January.
Duncan grew up in Edinburgh and played with various (mainly orchestral) groups around Scotland until work commitments meant an enforced break from playing. After moving to the North East in 2000 he became involved in brass banding and, after a number of stints as a guest player, he joined Reg Vardy full time in 2017

Our wonderful shed-builders. Organised, good at van-packing and talented too!
