Saturday Spotlight – Andrew Hedley (Principal Euphonium)

Andrew joined the Reg Vardy Band in March 2014 at the age of 15 and immediately impressed with his technical virtuosity and amazing sight reading ability. The band was very fortunate to have found its future principal euphonium player- Andrew took the “end chair” in September 2015 and has performed brilliantly ever since, winning the solo prize at the Doctor Martin competition in 2017 with Peter Graham’s Brillante-awarded by none other than Doctor Robert Childs..

Andrew is a former NYBBGB member and has led the euphonium section of various Salvation Army music school bands, incuding the SA’s Territorial (National) Youth Band (principal euph 2014-2017) Internationally, he has performed as guest principal euphonium and soloist with the SA’s German Staff Band, as well as playing in Disneyland Paris!

He won the James Etherington Music Award in 2014 and was a finalist in the Rotary North of England and Scotland Young Musician Competition in 2015.

Along with four other euphonium players, in 2016 Andrew took part in a CD recording with Derick Kane for a track on Derick’s latest solo CD to celebrate 40 years as principal euphonium of the International Staff Band.

As well as this he’s a thoroughly nice young man and a terrific bandsman. We’re very pleased, honoured and proud to have him!

Come and hear Andrew playing Brillante at our next concert at Chester le Street Salvation Army on Saturday 7th July.
